Winterpractise, oil on MDF, 15x 30 cm, Astrid Volquardsen, 2017

This was done shortly after I returned from a glorious morning at the Alster.

I was surprised one morning by a rowing boat for racing practice and its accompanying motorboat. O I just now how they felt. The rowing club in sight they longed on one hand  for  the end of agony and  the end of practice. But on the other hand I now very well from my active canoe time that these are very special moments you don’t get often. The surface as smooth as glass and in the background Hamburg slowly waking up. Magic moments.

If it were a canoe out on the lake I would change instantly.

Colored Grays

My new workshops are coming up and there is always the question which sticks to buy.

Colored greys are a key element to my paintings. Very often pastel painters don’t have these greys or neutrals in their collection, but they’re necessary for a good balanced painting. Why do I not simply use greys mixed from black and white? Because they don’t exists in nature and make a painting look dull. There is never a pure white or black or a mixture from these in my paintings. For my white clouds I use a very light blue, yellow or green.

As you can see in my plein air oil painting study »Sunday evening.«

To recognize these greys can be learned and it is one of the reasons why it’s so important to paint plein air and have a really good look at the colors out there. A camera will never be able to differentiate the spectrum as the human eye does.

When painting with oils you can simply mix grays or neutrals:

Pastel artists need to buy the sticks. How do you find them? Well, look at the unimpressive colors in the assortment. They are overlooked when placed next to the bright colors. Girault

I really like the color range from Great American Artworks. And I really do like the creativity in naming those greys: Dorian ( refers to the novel The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde), Earl ( tea) and Church Mouse.

Some of my personal favorite colored grays for pastels.

Plein Air: Sunday Evening,

Sunday Evening, Plein Air, 18×24, Oil on MDF, 2017, Astrid Volquardsen

As the rest of the Nation spend a beautiful winter day, we in the far north had another gray day.

Besides a nice cup of tea you just have to go outside. I am again surprised how colorful a gray day can be.

Color mixing tip: Don’t use black to mix gray , instead use the complimentary colors. They make really nice gray nuances.

Even though it doesn’t seem like it I keep working hard. My paintings are waiting to be photographed.

Snow produces this special light even though it might not be seen directly in the painting. I painted in the sun rise at 7.30 this morning but stopped when the light had changed too much. I plan to finish that one in the studio.

After sunrise I started a second painting and the light changed again quickly and the clouds just left a tiny space for the yellow of the sky. Now one has to work quickly, setting colors and values and just leave it alone. I am quite satisfied except with the bank at the bridge. I might go back to this one in the studio and do some correcting touches. I will probably regret it.

It just pays off to go to the same place again and again. Some day it just comes all together and the feeling, the color for a place emerges in a painting. love this one.

This is one of my new favorite places in Hamburg. The dogs on their morning rounds ( with their owners) know me already and when I found the time their is always a cuddle for them in store.

We Hamburger love this view which shows the silhouette across the big lake.

Plein Air: Yellow light

After these grey days which accompanied us over the Christmas days this week is really nice with clear cold weather.

Upon arriving at the Alster in the dusk I was greeted by a blackbird which sang his heart out. Already looking for a mate! I think he got something wrong with the saying: The early bird catches the worm. Or he got way to much testosterone in his blood.

Anyway. I wanted to check out the light situation at the Alsterpark. What really struck me was the yellow light/ color on the lawn. How much yellow is too much yellow? I need to come back again on Thursday and start a new one.

Another form of art. Hot chocolate afterwards at the cafe.

Plein Air: Morning at the Alster

Hamburg - Pier Rabenstraße

What a wonderful morning at the Alster. This a beautiful lake right in the middle of Hamburg. What you can’t hear are the hundreds of crows leaving their night trees. Kind of magic.

For me it’s always important to catch a mood of a scene. I felt confirmed by an interview which Daniel Keys gave the Plein Air Magazine. He describes his progress after he studied with Jeremy Lipkin. Lipkin painted only on a small canvas to capture the overall feeling of a place. This way he doesn’t get lost in details.

Well, this will be my motto for 2017. Anyway, no time for details when it’s this freezing cold.
