These days spring seems to be on the doorstep, but not long ago Jack Frost had the lake in his firm grip. Or at least the pedalos. It won’t be long and the paddle wheels of these little touristboats will be heard across the lake.

This painting dates back to mid February when it was bitterly cold. It started with a plein air study but standing in the shadow int the cold wind let it come to an early end. So I started this piece straight in the studio the next morning, all the light still fresh in my head.

You can see the view in the middle of Hamburg the so called »Jungfernstieg«. »For Hamburg residents, the historical importance of the promenade plays a major role: In the past, families came here on Sunday to walk and introduce their unmarried daughters (« Jungfern«) – hence the name.«

Today it’s still the meeting point for all kinds od folks, but without their parents.

Biike fire: a long tradition at the Northfrisian coast

2

Unfortunately I can’t attend tonight at the traditional Frisian fire st the coast. But I love to go there.

So I post some pics from last year.

»Tjen di Biiki ön« is an northfrisian dialect which was originally widely spoken along the coast and the islands of north Germany. It’s a calling to throw the torches onto a big pile of wood and hay and light the fire (Biike) on the 21first of February.

This is a very old tradition and goes back to the Germanic mythology and was meant to be an oblation to the God Wotan. Even though through the centuries after Christianization the people held on to those fires.

In the 17th and 18th century the people on the northfrisian island were very poor and the new trade of whaling lured a lot of man from the islands. So every February they gathered around this big fire before they took of of the the ships and went to the Artic Sea at Spitzbergen.

Today it strengthens the northfrisian companionship.

The pastel was painted afterwards in my studio.
