Colourimpressions: Winterfog

We’ve got loads of snow this Winter and loads of fog. Unfortunaltely the sun hardly shows up to dip the scenery in this beautifully blueish purple pigment. So I have to stay with the fog. It’s more interesting in the twilight, rather than during the day, when its only grey, grey… you know it. So, I’m back to my small studies, trying to catch the feeling and color of the place. I do struggle and think to do some Notans to get a better understanding of the compositorial possibilities, because the value range is so limited.

These are absolutely beautiful Astrid! I love them all. Such feeling in each one. The subtle changes in these twilight scenes remind me of Whistler's nocturnes, exquisitely quiet.

Astrid, these pastels, with their gentle images and whispered colors, are spellbinding. You make a foggy day sublime.

    Hi Loriann,
if I remind you of Whistler's nocturnes I will be happily on the lookout for another day of fog.

    Sam,
    thanks for your poetic words.

    Einfach Klasse !!

These are beautiful and so nicely composed, Astrid. Sorry, but I'm hoping for more fog and snow for you! I especially like Winternebel II with the warm red-brown color amongst the grays.

    Hi Brian,
well, today we have a beautiful bright and sunny day …:-)

The warm red-brown comes from the oak tree, which hold on to their leaves.

Wow, these are so fantastic! They feel so still and cold, exactly as they should. They remind me a bit of the impression I got from the book series The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Do you know it?

    Hi Jala,
I didn't know the books but had a look at amazon. I can see the similarity. Do you know, if the illustrator used pastels? It's hard to tell.

    Hi Astrid,
Our miscommunication on this is very interesting! I actually meant that your paintings remind me of the mental impressions I got while reading the books, not at all to do with the book's illustrations! Funny. :)
