Sometimes it’s quite hard to endure this uncertainty especially when all you do is producing crap. At least it feels like this. To others this might be no crap at all, but every artist has to go trough these stages just on different levels. If you’ve hit this point only one thing helps: keep painting, painting, painting or sketching. Only at the easel or in your sketchbook you will leave this place of uncertainty beyond. Sometimes you might hide away from your easel but in the end you have to face the paper.

As the American artist and blogger Danny Gragory puts it in his splendid article »On making shit«

»And the only answer is to keep trying and pushing and learning and discovering. The road has no end, just lots of twists and turns, and it keeps moving upwards even if we can’t feel it all the time.«

When everything is right and ready, things will happen and everything will click into place. I was blessed this year with two great awards, my trip to France and meeting Sally Strand, my paintings, my new gallery. But be rerasuured that I know the twists and turns of the road very well. And I certainly will be there again, because this is just part of an artists life.

I am looking forward to next year with two new journeys awaiting me. One will lead me to New York to the the convention of the Pastel Society of America where I will meet old and new friends which I have made along my journey as being an artist.

Furthermore I plan to set up an on-line shop where you can buy some of my paintings via Paypal. We still work on the details and set up but in the end you can buy a painting with passepartout and frame shipped to your doorstep and ready to find a place on your wall. We first start with a shop in German but later in the year I would like to have a set up for overseas as well.

My dear readers out there: thank you for joying my journey. To the artists out there always keep in mind: Things will click into place when and if you’re ready for them. Maybe it’s just a little bit later than you thought, because right now you’re in a twist or turn of the road. Just keep going.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year,
Astrid

The last ray of sunlight, Pastel, 25×55 cm, 2013 © Astrid Volquardsen sold »The last ray of sunlight« combines my different developments over this past year: my sea-and-cloudscapes as well as my detailed close ups from the harbor.
