Gamestopper
Sketchbook, 2010© Astrid Volquardsen
James Gurney wrote a very funny blog entry about gamestoppers, when something shuts down a plein air effort. If you haven’t read it, please go there and read the comments as well.
On Loriann Signori’s blog Richard Mckinley tells a story about some pastel sticks, that mysteriosly disappeared.
I had my last gamestopper at Convy Castle in Wales. I wanted to sketch and from a single bench I had the perfect view. As I sat there, happily sketching away I was startled by a loud »splash« and I looked right onto a giant pigeon pup next to me. I jumped up and as I was considering to sit down again, another giant pup landed on the very spot where I had sat before
I guess, you can call this a gamestopper too.

Wales Coastal Path
One of the best opportunities to discover Wales beauty is probably the Wales Coast Path. From north to south the path covers 800 miles of stunning coastline. The path takes you along the shore with cliffs, down to sandy beaches and coves, small harbours, some nice Ins and tearomms and of cause some really great castles. This is defenatley a place I would love to come back. I did some sketches and what striked me most is the color of the water. It really is turquoise in a way – seemed to be somehow fake.

In France, Eva made some really nice poses a la Degas in the bathroom. Everyone had taken loads of photos. From mine I have picked some I would like to turn into pastels.
It’s really enriching to do the figurative work besides my landcapes. One of the reasons is, that my approach considering the technique and colors, is quite different compared to my landcapes.

Wales – Three Cliffs Bay
© Astrid Volquardsen, 2010On our first day in Wales it was pouring with rain. What else, he? Anyway, we got kind of an idea how beautiful this country must be.
Along the coastline you there are some splended beaches. Some of them will be flooded by the rising tide. At this area of Southwales the tidal range can be up to 9 meters!
I did a quick sketch and later back home in my studio some colorstudies. I’m back to Whistler sooner than I thought I would be.

Turner at the Tate Britain
© Marc VolquardsenAt the Tate Britain in London works of the british painter William Turner are shown. In a special room they explain how his printing technique as well as his color palette had changed over the years. In his early works he used organic and mineral pigments and when later the industrie introduced new pigments he used them too. I very much liked a display, where they showed how his colors had changed during his travels, especially after he had visited Germany and Italy.
The best thing probably was a set up, like the students used to copie Turners work in the 19th centuary. The visitors are invited to do the same. Somehow cool to sit in front of one of Turners originals drawings and copie them.
